Our Story

Combating Desertification in Northeastern Kenya was founded in 2023 with a singular vision: to halt the advancing desert and restore balance to the arid lands of northeastern Kenya. We believe that healthy land, thriving wildlife, and access to clean water are not separate goals—they are one interconnected mission.

What began as a response to a growing crisis has quickly evolved into a grassroots movement rooted in community action, environmental science, and emergency resilience. In just two short years, we have moved from assessment to action, proving that even in the harshest climates, restoration is possible.

Our Journey

From Assessment to Action: Our Milestones

2023 — The Founding
Born out of urgent need, our organization was established to combat the accelerating desertification threatening northeastern Kenya’s people, wildlife, and ecosystems.

2024 — Understanding the Crisis
We conducted a comprehensive region-wide assessment to map the root causes of desertification. The findings confirmed what communities had long known: water scarcity is the critical bottleneck. Without water, land cannot recover, crops cannot grow, and wildlife cannot survive.

2025 — A Year of Impact

  • Groundwater Recharge — We broke ground on the construction of swales near the River Dawa in Mandera. These earthworks slow down rainwater runoff, allowing it to soak deep into the ground, recharging depleted aquifers and breathing life back into dry soils.

  • Emergency Relief — When heavy floods struck the region, we pivoted quickly to provide essential humanitarian assistance. Our team delivered emergency relief and support to affected communities, proving that environmental work and disaster response go hand in hand.

  • Seeding the Future — We launched a seedling distribution program, putting drought-resistant trees and crops directly into the hands of local farmers. This initiative empowers communities to practice sustainable land management while building resilience against future droughts.
